Omega-3 fatty acids are unique types of polyunsaturated fatty acids essential in our diet since we cannot synthetize them |
Omega 3 fatty acids are in 3 main forms in our diet:
Alpha linolenic acid (LNA) |
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) |
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) |
Our body does not convert efficiently LNA (found mostly in plant-derived foods – flaxseed, walnuts, soybean and canola oils) into EPA and DHA found predominantly in fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines), fish oil and to a lesser extent in flax-based omega 3 shell eggs |
In 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a qualified health claim for omega 3 fatty acids: “supportive but not conclusive research concluded shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease”… more |
The role of omega 3 fatty acids has gained increasing importance in scientific circles with clinical studies indicating that omega 3 fatty acids are essential for optimal health and offer prevention against cardiovascular disease and assistance in the management of chronic diseases … learn more about Omega 3 |
The average North American diet provides approximately 1,000 – 2,000 mg daily of total omega-3 fatty acids, most are in the form of LNA, which is inefficiently converted into EPA and DHA |
Less than 10% of our total intake of Omega 3 fatty acids are EPA and DHA, the most physiologically active omega 3 |
There is currently no recommended intake for omega 3 established by the Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture. In the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 (Chapter 6, pg. 30-31), it is stated that “evidence suggests that consuming approximately two servings of fish per week (approximately 8 ounces total) may reduce the risk of mortality from coronary heart disease and that consuming EPA and DHA may reduce the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease in people who have already experienced a cardiac event”– http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/pdf/DGA2005.pdf |
The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) issued a statement in 2004 recommending a minimum intake of 500 mg/day of EPA and DHA for cardiovascular health – http://www.issfal.org.uk/Welcome/PolicyStatement3.asp |
Typical North American intakes of EPA and DHA are approximately 100 – 150 mg per day, about one-fifth of what is considered necessary for the maintenance of optimal health. Few people achieved the weekly recommendation of two fish servings; Egg Creations can help! |

Lutein is a natural compound found in plants and animal tissues belonging to the class of xanthophylls. Xanthophylls provide color as we can see it in nature, responsible for the red in tomatoes and the orange in carrots. Lutein cannot be synthetized and must be found in our diet. |
Lutein is found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and in eggs

Lutein is deposited in the retinal tissues and lens, present at levels far superior to its plasmatic level. Lutein is also present in smaller amounts in the skin, breast and other tissues |
Lutein forms a very efficient filter for blue-light that reaches the back of the eye and likely contribute to the reduction of oxidative stress on the retina. Lutein may also act directly as an antioxidant and decrease the adverse effects of oxidative stresss on the retina |
Eggs provide a highly bioavailable source of lutein, a prerequisite for lutein to play a protective role in human health |
Higher intakes of lutein may have a positive effect on age related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease … to learn more about lutein, … click here |
The average daily intake of lutein is about 1,000 mcg |
There is currently no recommended intake for lutein established by the Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture. In the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 (Chapter 5, pg 23-24), it is recommended to consume between 2-5 cups (4-10 servings) of fruits and vegetables, translating into 3,000 – 6,000 mcg lutein daily – http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/pdf/DGA2005.pdf |
Lutein is present in large amount in vegetables like kale, spinach and Broccoli, vegetables less and less consumed on a daily basis. Egg Creations can help! |

The Heart Truth
What is The Heart Truth?
The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in partnership with: the Office on Women’s Health, DHHS; American Heart Association; Women Heart: the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease; and other organizations committed to the health and well-being of women.
The centerpiece of The Heart Truth is the Red Dress, first introduced by NHLBI as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness during American Heart Month at New York’s Fashion Week in February 2003. The Red Dress is a red alert that heart disease is the #1 killer of women—and an urgent reminder to every woman to care for her heart. It reminds women that heart disease is not just a man’s disease; it’s the #1 killer of women.
Why is Egg Creations a partner?
Egg Creations is proud to be a partner of The Heart Truth. Eating Egg Creations is just one way you can adapt a more heart-healthy lifestyle. Egg Creations is low in fat and cholesterol and contains omega-3, an important nutrient for heart health. Look for the Red Dress symbol on all Egg Creations packages.
Tips for Heart Health
Don’t smoke, and if you do, quit. Women who smoke are two to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than non-smoking women. Smoking also boosts the risk of stroke and cancer. |
Aim for a healthy weight. It’s important for a long, vigorous life. Being overweight causes many preventable deaths. |
Get moving. Make a commitment to be more physically active. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most – preferably all – days of the week. |
Eat for heart health. Choose a diet low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol, and moderate in total fat. Be sure to include whole grains, fruits and vegetables. |
Know your numbers. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol (total, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), and blood glucose. Work with your doctor to improve any numbers that are not normal. |
