Introducing
the Omega 3 Egg!
Winner of 1997 Canadian Grand Prix New Product Award from the CCGD
and Canadian Grocer Magazine.
Naturegg Omega 3 is a nutritionally-enhanced egg for people looking for natural foods with more essential nutrients. While all eggs are nutritious, all-natural and offer a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals, Naturegg Omega 3 eggs also provide an additional source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. To produce these eggs, our chickens eat an all-natural, flax-based diet that was developed by researchers at the University of Guelph. We at Burnbrae Farms added vitamin E to this diet producing an egg with seven times more vitamin E and eight times more omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids than regular eggs. Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians states that vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for the maintenance of general health, normal growth and development. Best of all, consumer testing has shown that Naturegg Omega 3 eggs have the same great taste and cooking versatility so unique to regular eggs. Adding vitamin E and flax to the hen's diet may mean these eggs cost a little more, but don't you think you're worth it?
To find Naturegg Omega 3 eggs, look in your grocer's egg section for the egg carton with the chickens in a field of purple flax flowers, or ask your grocer for them by name.

How the Omega 3 egg is produced
You must ask yourself, how exactly do they get the vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids into the egg? It's simple. What chickens eat affects the nutritional value of the eggs they produce. Feeding a chicken flaxseed, which contains an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids, modifies the fat in the yolk of her eggs to contain more of these good omega-3 fats, and less saturated fat and omega-6 fatty acids. Extra vitamin E in the hen's diet has the same effect, increasing the vitamin E content in her eggs as well. So you need not be concerned that there is anything unnatural about these eggs. They are all-natural, nutritious and they taste great too!
The research behind Naturegg Omega 3
For many years, researchers at the University of Guelph have been working hard to develop a feed formula for chickens that would increase the omega-3 content of their eggs without sacrificing the taste of the eggs. After the proper feed ration was developed for the birds, the eggs they produced had to be tested for the effect they would have on people. Burnbrae Farms collaborated with these researchers, providing them with financial support, in hopes that someday we would have a product that we could sell to the public. Our goal has been to provide a source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that is versatile and that everyone will enjoy. All of this research has taken several years, but now we have Naturegg Omega 3, a natural food with extra vitamin E, that has been proven to increase the omega-3 content in the blood of the people who eat them!
Omega-3: An important dietary fatty acid
Back in 1990, Health and Welfare Canada recognized that Canadians were eating too much saturated fat - a major risk factor in the development of heart disease. It was at this time that they first made the recommendation for consumers tore balance their fat intake to include more foods containing essential omega-3 fatty acids. As stated by registered dietitian Randy Meltzer, "Imbalances in fat intake may be responsible for many chronic disorders", and it was becoming obvious that we Canadians are not eating enough of the essential omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, Nutrition Recommendations state that the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids should range between 4:1 and 10:1, and that our diet is currently too high in omega-6 fatty acids and saturated fat. As a result of these findings, Health Canada finally made regulations for omega-3 labeling in 1994, and we started working on the launch of the Omega 3 egg.
Now, Health Canada has recommended levels of intake for omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for people of all ages. For adults between 25 and 49 years old, these are 1500 mg of omega-3 polyunsaturates per day for men and 1100 mg per day for women. See the chart below for other age classes. Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians also states that vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for the maintenance of general health, normal growth and development. Dietary sources of vitamin E and omega-3 polyunsaturates are especially important because essential nutrients, by definition, cannot be formed by the body; they must come from food. Two Naturegg Omega 3 eggs provide a minimum of 40% of the recommended daily intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and 100% of vitamin E.
